Name:
Forthyron 200μg – Foil 10 tablets
Manufacturer:
Dechra
Description:
For the treatment of hypothyroidism (low production of thyroid hormones) in dogs.
Ingredients:
200 micrograms of levothyroxine sodium per tablet, equivalent to 194 micrograms of levothyroxine
Key benefits:
L-thyroxine is identical in structure and mode of action to physiologically secreted thyroxine (T₄) and is commonly present in mammals whose thyroid gland functions normally.
Thyroxine is mainly metabolized to triiodothyronine (T₃). T₄ and T₃ have a wide variety of biological effects throughout the body.
They are essential for regulating basal metabolic rate, heart function, blood flow, lipid and carbohydrate metabolism.
They are also essential for the normal growth and development of the neurological and bone systems.
Intended for:
Dogs.
Method of administration:
Oral.
Form of presentation:
Foil with 10 tablets.
Dosage:
The recommended starting dose of levothyroxine sodium is 10 μg/kg body weight, orally, every 12 hours. Due to the variability in absorption and metabolism, the dose may require modifications before a complete clinical response is observed. The starting dose and frequency of administration are only a starting point. Treatment can be highly individualized and customized to the requirements for a particular dog, along with monitoring by the veterinarian.
In dogs, the absorption of levothyroxine sodium can be affected by the presence of food. The treatment schedule and feeding must therefore be kept consistently every day.
Possible side effects:
Restoring physical activity can expose or intensify other medical problems, such as arthritis.
Side effects of thyroid hormones are generally associated with excessive doses and correspond to symptoms of excess thyroid hormones, e.g., increased thirst and urination, weight loss without a loss of appetite, increased food intake, rapid and labored breathing, hyperactivity, excitability, and increased heart rate.
Hypersensitivity reactions (pruritus) have been reported very rarely.
If you notice any side effects, even those not already included in this leaflet, or you think the medicine has had no effect, please inform your veterinarian.
Precautions:
Do not use in dogs suffering from uncorrected adrenal insufficiency.
Do not use in cases of known hypersensitivity to levothyroxine sodium or any of the excipients.
The tablets are flavored. To avoid any accidental ingestion, keep the tablets away from animals.
Inform your veterinarian if your dog is already being treated with any other veterinary medicinal products, as this may affect treatment.
ATTENTION! For veterinary use only! Keep out of reach of children!
How to store:
Store in a place away from moisture and direct exposure to the sun, at temperatures up to 25°C.
