Postinor-1 is an emergency contraceptive that can be used within the first 72 hours (3 days) of unprotected sex or if your usual method of contraception has failed. It prevents about 84% of possible pregnancies, if administered within the first 72 hours after unprotected sexual intercourse.
Properties:
It is used in the following situations: no contraceptive method has been used during sexual intercourse; the contraceptive method has been used incorrectly, for example if a condom has been punctured, slipped or used improperly, if the egg or vaginal diaphragm has changed position, broken, been torn or removed too early, in case of a failed interruption during intercourse interrupt (for example, sperm has been ejaculated into the vagina or external genitalia).
It prevents the ovaries from releasing an egg.
It prevents sperm from fertilizing any eggs that may have already been released.
Composition:
The active substance is levonorgestrel. Each orodispersible tablet contains 1500 micrograms of levonorgestrel.
The other ingredients are: Mannitol (E421), Pregelatinized Corn Starch, Low Substitution Hydroxypropylcellulose, Crospovidone Type B, Sodium Stearylfumarate, Opadry orange 03A230010 (Hypromellose 2910, Titanium Dioxide (E 171), Twilight Yellow FCF Aluminum Lake (E 110), Yellow Iron Oxide (E 172), Indigo Carmine Aluminum Lake (E 132)), Colloidal Silicon Dioxide Anhydrous, Aspartame (E 951), Orange flavor (corn maltodextrin, flavor components, alpha-tocopherol (E307)).
Method of administration:
Always take this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or as your pharmacist has told you. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure. Take the tablet as soon as possible, preferably within the first 12 hours, but no later than 72 hours (3 days) after unprotected sex. Do not delay taking the tablet. The sooner you take the tablet after unprotected sex, the better it works.
The tablet helps you not to get pregnant only if you take it within 72 hours of unprotected sex.
Postinor-1 can be taken at any time during your menstrual cycle, assuming you are not already pregnant or think you may be pregnant. Remove the tablet from the blister by pressing with dry hands. The orodispersible tablet should be placed on the tongue, where it will dissolve and can be swallowed with saliva. Do not chew the tablet.
Warnings:
Before taking Postinor-1, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
Do not take Postinor-1 if you are allergic to levonorgestrel or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.
Pregnancy, breast-feeding, and fertility: If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant, or plan to become pregnant, ask your doctor or pharmacist for recommendations before taking this medication.
Pregnancy: You should not use this medication if you are already pregnant. If you become pregnant even after taking this medication, it is important to see your doctor. There is no evidence that Postinor-1 will harm the baby developing in your womb if you use Postinor-1 as directed. However, your doctor may want to check that the pregnancy is not ectopic (in which the baby develops somewhere outside the uterus). This warning is especially important if you experience severe abdominal pain after taking Postinor-1 or if you have had an ectopic pregnancy, fallopian tube surgery, or pelvic inflammatory disease in the past.
Breast–feeding: Very small amounts of the active substance of this medicine may appear in the milk. It is believed that it does not harm the baby, but if you are worried you can take the tablet immediately after breastfeeding and avoid breastfeeding for at least 8 hours after taking the tablet. By doing this, you take your tablet long before your next breastfeeding and reduce the amount of active substance your baby can take in from breast milk.
Fertility: Postinor–1 increases the possibility of menstrual cycle disorders that can sometimes hasten or delay the day of ovulation, resulting in a change in the date of fertility. Although there are no data on long–term fertility, fertility is expected to return rapidly after treatment with Postinor–1 and therefore regular contraception should be continued or initiated as soon as possible after using Postinor–1.
Driving and using machines: Postinor-1 is unlikely to affect your ability to drive or use machines. However, do not drive or use machinery if you feel tired or dizzy.
If, after taking Postinor-1, you have another unprotected sexual intercourse (also if it occurs during the same menstrual cycle), the tablet will not exert its contraceptive effect and there is a risk of pregnancy again.
If you vomit within three hours of taking the tablet, you should take another tablet.
The tablet will not prevent pregnancy every time and is more effective if you take it as soon as possible after unprotected sex. It is better to take it in the first 12 hours than to postpone until the third day. It has no effect if you are already pregnant. If you have another unprotected sex after taking Postinor–1 (also if it occurs during the same menstrual cycle), the tablet will not exert its contraceptive effect and there is, again, a risk of becoming pregnant.
