PHARMACOTHERAPEUTIC ACTION
Sulfamethoxazole acts bacteriostatically in usual concentrations, but in high concentrations it can be bactericidal. The antibacterial action of sulfamethoxazole is diminished by pus and damaged tissues. Trimethoprim has antibacterial action with a spectrum similar to that of sulfamethoxazole. It is active against most Gram-negative bacilli, which are susceptible at concentrations of 1 μg/ml or less. It usually acts bacteriostatically, but in high concentrations it can be bactericidal against certain germs. Trimethoprim used in combination with sulfamethoxazole synergistically inhibits the biosynthesis of folic acid at the level of bacterial enzymes and thus the two bacteriostatic chemotherapeutics become bactericidal. Another advantage of trimethoprim is that no toxic phenomena occur, even if it is administered for a long time.

DOSAGE, ROUTE AND METHOD OF ADMINISTRATION
SULFAMETOPRIM – tablets are administered orally, as such, or incorporated into food, after crushing the tablet.
Dogs: administer 1 tablet/5 kg body weight/day (25 mg s.a. sulfamethoxazole / 5 mg s.a. trimethoprim/kg b.w./day), for 5-7 days.
Cats: administer 1 tablet/5 kg body weight/day (25 mg s.a. sulfamethoxazole / 5 mg s.a. trimethoprim/kg b.w./day), for 5 days.
It is recommended that treatment be continued for 2-3 days after the disappearance of symptoms. To ensure correct dosage, the body weight of the animals should be determined whenever possible, to avoid underdosing. If the animals do not show an improvement in their health, consult a veterinarian for re-evaluation of the diagnosis.
