PHARMACOTHERAPEUTIC ACTION
Gentamicin is an antibiotic from the aminoglycoside group produced by Micromonospora purpurea, with bactericidal action that acts by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunits of the bacterial cell, causing disruption of messenger RNA activity, which results in the synthesis of atypical polypeptides, toxic or inappropriate for bacterial metabolism. Gentamicin is active both in the multiplication phase and in the resting phase of the germs. The spectrum of activity is broad, including gram-negative bacteria (Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus spp., Escherichia coli, Klebsiela spp., Enterobacter spp.) and gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus spp.).
Gentamicin is very effective by local application on primary and secondary infections of the eye, especially those caused by bacteria resistant to beta-lactam antibiotics. Dexamethasone is a synthetic corticosteroid presenting an anti-inflammatory effect 30 times stronger than hydrocortisone. It is very active in local applications. The association in ophthalmic solutions reduces healing time due to its antiphlogistic, antiallergic and immunosuppressive properties.
TARGET SPECIES
Dogs and cats.
INDICATIONS
GENTOCIN PLUS is indicated in dogs and cats for the treatment of ocular infections (conjunctivitis, keratitis, keratoconjunctivitis, corneal ulcers, blepharitis and blepharoconjunctivitis) caused by bacteria sensitive to gentamicin.
DOSAGE, ROUTE AND METHOD OF ADMINISTRATION
GENTOCIN PLUS – is administered by instilling 1-2 drops into the conjunctival sac, 2-4 times a day until healing. The duration of treatment should not exceed 7-10 days.
CONTRAINDICATIONS, PRECAUTIONS AND ADVERSE REACTIONS
Do not administer to animals with corneal ulcers or those with glaucoma. Do not administer in case of hypersensitivity to the active substances or any of the excipients. Occasionally, local irritations or allergic reactions may occur. In this case, administration is discontinued and appropriate treatment is applied.
The safety of the veterinary medicinal product has not been established during pregnancy and lactation.
The simultaneous use of other ototoxic and/or nephrotoxic substances potentiates the ototoxicity and/or nephrotoxicity of gentamicin.
Long-term treatment with GENTOCIN PLUS may cause increased intraocular pressure, may cause the appearance of posterior subcapsular cataracts or glaucoma. Corticosteroids or antibiotics in long-term treatment may favor superinfections with fungi or other resistant microorganisms.
In high concentrations, local application of corticosteroids may inhibit corneal epithelialization.
Incompatibilities in solutions with: amphotericin B, ampicillin, benzylpenicillin, carbencillin, cephalothin, chloramphenicol, sodium hemisuccinate, heparin.
