PHARMACOTHERAPEUTIC ACTION
Gentamicin is an antibiotic of the aminoglycoside group produced by Micromonospora purpurea, with bactericidal action that acts by fixing on the 30S ribosomal subunits of the bacterial cell, causing disruption of messenger RNA activity, which results in the synthesis of atypical, toxic or inadequate polypeptides for bacterial metabolism. Gentamicin is active in both the multiplication and resting phases of germs. The spectrum of activity is broad, including gram–negative (Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus spp., Escherichia coli, Klebsiela spp., Enterobacter spp.) and gram–positive (Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus spp.) bacteria.
Gentamicin is very effective through topical applications on primary and secondary eye infections, especially those caused by bacteria resistant to beta–lactam antibiotics. Dexamethasone is a synthetic corticosteroid with an anti-inflammatory effect 30 times more powerful than hydrocortisone. It is very active in local applications. The combination in ophthalmic solutions reduces the healing time due to its antiphlogistic, antiallergic and immunosuppressive properties.
TARGET SPECIES
Dogs and cats.
INDICATIONS
GENTOCIN PLUS is indicated in dogs and cats for the treatment of eye infections (conjunctivitis, keratitis, keratoconjunctivitis, corneal ulcers, blepharitis and blepharoconjunctivitis) caused by gentamicin-sensitive bacteria.
DOSAGE, ROUTE AND METHOD OF ADMINISTRATION
GENTOCIN PLUS – is administered by instilling 1–2 drops into the conjunctival sac, 2–4 times a day until healing. Treatment should not exceed 7 – 10 days.
CONTRAINDICATIONS, PRECAUTIONS AND SIDE EFFECTS
Do not use in animals with corneal ulcers and those with glaucoma. Do not administer in case of hypersensitivity to the active substances or to any of the excipients. Occasionally local irritation or allergic reactions may occur. In this case, the administration is discontinued and the appropriate treatment is applied.
The safety of the veterinary medicinal product has not been established during pregnancy and lactation.
The simultaneous use of other ototoxic and/or nephrotoxic substances potentiates the ototoxicity and/or nephrotoxicity of gentamicin.
Long–term treatment with GENTOCIN PLUS may increase intraocular pressure, cause posterior subcapsular cataracts or glaucoma. Corticosteroids or antibiotics in long-term treatment can promote superinfections with fungi or other resistant microorganisms.
In high concentrations, topical application of corticosteroids may inhibit corneal epithelialisation.
Incompatibilities in solutions with: amphotericin B, ampicillin, benzylpenicillin, carbencillin, cephalothin, chloramphenicol, sodium hemisuccinate, heparin.
