Loxicom for cats, a light yellow oral suspension containing MELOXICAM as the main active ingredient, is used in cats to treat inflammation and pain in chronic musculoskeletal conditions.
According to the leaflet:
“Contraindications
Do not use in pregnant or lactating cats.
Do not use in cats with gastrointestinal disorders such as irritation and bleeding, liver, cardiac or renal function disorders and bleeding disorders.
Do not use in case of hypersensitivity to the active substance or to any of the excipients.
Do not use in kittens less than 6 weeks of age.
Special precautions for use in animals
In case of adverse reactions, discontinue treatment and consult a veterinarian.
Avoid administration to dehydrated, hypovolaemic or hypotensive animals, as there is a potential risk of renal toxicity.
The response to long-term therapy will be monitored at regular intervals by a veterinarian.
Loxicom 0.5 mg / ml oral suspension for cats will not be used after parenteral administration of meloxicam or other NSAIDs for which a dose has not been established for such cases.
Adverse reactions (frequency and severity)
Typical adverse reactions to NSAIDs such as loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhoea, bloody faeces, apathy and renal failure have been observed occasionally. These adverse reactions generally occur within the first week of treatment and in most cases are transient and disappear after the end of treatment, but in very rare cases they can be serious or fatal.
Interactions with other medicinal products and other forms of interaction
Other NSAIDs, diuretics, anticoagulants, aminoglycoside antibiotics and substances with high protein binding capacity compete and thus may lead to toxic effects.
Loxicom cannot be administered together with other NSAIDs or glucocorticosteroids.
The administration of competing products with nephrotoxic potential should be avoided.
The initiation of treatment with anti-inflammatory substances may cause additional or increased adverse effects and for this reason, at least 24 hours of observation is necessary before starting treatment with such veterinary medicinal products. The treatment-free period, however, must take into account pharmacological properties of previously used products.
Amounts to be administered and route of administration
Oral administration.
Administer with food or directly into the oral cavity.
Shake before use.
Initial treatment is a single dose of 0.1 mg meloxicam/kg body weight on the first day. Treatment should be continued once daily by oral administration (at 24-hour intervals) of a maintenance dose of 0.05 mg meloxicam/kg body weight. Special care should be taken to establish the exact dose.
Do not exceed the recommended dose.
The suspension can be administered using the syringe provided in the Loxicom product packaging. Dosage procedure: The syringes fit onto the bottle and have a graduated scale in kg – body weight that corresponds to the maintenance dose. Thus, for the start of treatment on the first day, it is necessary to administer a volume twice the maintenance volume. A clinical response can normally be observed within 7 days.
Treatment should be discontinued after 14 days at the latest if no clinical improvement occurs. Avoid contamination during use.”
