What is Furazolidon  and what it is used for

Furazolidon  is an antidiarrheal drug with bactericidal action (kills bacteria). It is used for the treatment of intestinal infections caused by some bacteria (enteritis, infectious enterocolitis and food poisoning caused by germs sensitive to furazolidone, bacillary dysentery, lambliasis) and cholera. Furazolidon  is indicated only for the treatment of adults.

How to Take Furazolidon 

Always take Furazolidon  exactly as your doctor has told you. You should talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure.

Furazolidon  100 mg is only indicated for the treatment of adults. If your doctor has not recommended otherwise, the usual doses are:
– Treatment of intestinal infections (enteritis, infectious enterocolitis, food poisoning, bacillary dysentery) or cholera: The recommended dose is one tablet of Furazolidon  100 mg (100 mg furazolidone), taken 4 times a day, at 6-hour intervals, for 7-10 days.

If you take more than you need from Furazolidon : If you take more than you need from Furazolidon  you may experience headache, nausea, vomiting, fever, joint pain, rapid heartbeat, high blood pressure, rapid breathing. If you are taking more of Furazolidon  than you should, please contact your doctor or go to the nearest hospital.

If you forget to take Furazolidon : do not take a double dose to make up for the missed dose.

Possible side effects

Like all medicines, Furazolidon can cause side effects, although they do not occur in all people.

Furazolidone is well tolerated and possible side effects disappear when the dose is reduced or treatment is discontinued. Rarely: headache, nausea, vomiting (at high doses), reactions
allergic such as rashes, fever, joint pain. Cases of haemolytic anaemia, leukopenia, agranulocytosis (in patients with a deficiency of an enzyme called glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase) have been reported very rarely. Furazolidone may stain your urine yellow-brown.
