PHARMACODYNAMIC PROPERTIES:
Fipronil is a broad-spectrum insecticide of the phenylpyrazole class that acts as a nerve toxin, penetrating the parasite’s body through the stigmata (sensory organs), but especially through the joints of the limbs where the chitin is thinner. Fipronil blocks synapses in the central nervous system of the parasites, resulting in hyperexcitation of the insect’s nerves and muscles, thus causing their death.
PHARMACOKINETICS PROPERTIES:
Fipronil accumulates in the secretion of the sebaceous glands and in the hair follicles, continuing to act for a longer period of time. After application to the animal’s skin, fipronil spreads throughout the body in approximately 24 hours, by translocation. It has no toxic effect on host animals since it is absorbed through the skin in a small proportion (approximately 16%) and decomposes relatively quickly by hydrolysis. The main route of excretion of fipronil is through feces (75%), and a small portion is also eliminated through urine.
