COMPOSITION
1 gram of powder contains:
Erythromycin thiocyanate………………………………………….. 60 mg
Excipient q.s.ad……………………………………………………… 1 g
Excipient: Lactose monohydrate, Citric acid monohydrate.
PHARMACOTHERAPEUTIC ACTION
Erythromycin is an antibiotic from the macrolide group, with a medium spectrum of action that includes: Gram-positive cocci (Streptococcus spp., Staphylococcus spp., including penicillin-resistant ones, pneumococci, enterococci), Gram-negative cocci (gonococci, meningococci – weak activity in vivo due to reduced diffusion in the cerebrospinal fluid), clostridia (C. tetani, perfringens, botulinum), B. subtilis, Sarcina lutea, Corinebacterium spp., as well as some Gram-negative bacilli (Brucella, Pasteurella, Haemophilus), spirochetes (Leptospira), mycoplasmas, rickettsiae, large viruses, some protozoa (Entamoeba, Toxoplasma, Trichomonas). Erythromycin has no effect on enterobacteriaceae (Salmonella, Aerobacter, E. coli, Pseudomonas, Proteus, Klebsiella), fungi and mushrooms. Erythromycin has a bacteriostatic/bactericidal action, depending on the dose, through a mechanism similar to chloramphenicol, consisting in inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis.
TARGET SPECIES
Cattle (nursing calves), rabbits and poultry (chickens, turkeys).
INDICATIONS
Erythromycin 6% is recommended for the treatment of diseases caused by germs sensitive to erythromycin in:
Cattle (nursing calves): respiratory and digestive tract infections, arthritis, infectious pododermatitis, omphalophlebitis
Rabbits: pasteurellosis, streptococcal and staphylococcal infections.
Chickens: mycoplasmosis, pasteurellosis, chronic respiratory disease, infectious sinusitis, staphylococcal arthritis, streptococcal infections.
Turkeys: air sacculitis, infectious sinusitis, staphylococcal arthritis, streptococcal infections.
DOSAGE, ROUTE AND METHOD OF ADMINISTRATION
Oral administration, after dissolution in drinking water or inclusion in feed:
Cattle (infant calves): (18-24 mg s.a./kg g.c./day):
In calves, administration is done individually and prepared ex tempore;
– 15-20 g Erythromycin 6%/50 kg body weight/day, the dose being fractionated and administered 2 times a day (every 12 hours), for 3-5 days;
Rabbits (daily): (20 mg s.a./kg g.c./day):
– 1 g Erythromycin 6%/3 kg body weight included in feed, for 3-5 days;
Chickens, turkeys (daily): (20 mg s.a./kg b.w./day):
– 1.375 kg Erythromycin 6% /1000 L water, for 3-5 days.
or 14 g Erythromycin 6% /10 liters water in a household system;
– 1.5 kg Erythromycin 6%/1000 kg feed, for 3-5 days
To ensure the administration of a correct dose, the body weight of the animals should be determined as accurately as possible. The medicated water should be freshly prepared every 24 hours. To achieve maximum efficiency, the medication should be combined with good management practices (proper hygiene, correct ventilation, avoidance of overcrowding).
If the animals do not show an improvement in their health, consult a veterinarian to re-evaluate the diagnosis.
CONTRAINDICATIONS, PRECAUTIONS AND ADVERSE REACTIONS
Do not administer to adult cattle. Avoid treating animals allergic to erythromycin or animals with liver dysfunction. Allergic reactions may rarely occur. Occasionally, erythromycin administered orally may cause gastrointestinal disturbances (diarrhea, vomiting, anorexia). The powder should not be administered as such.
For mass treatment, through feed or drinking water, it is recommended to prepare premixes for proper homogenization. The medicated water must be consumed in its entirety on the day of preparation.
To obtain maximum efficiency, the medication must be combined with good management practices (proper hygiene, correct ventilation, lack of overcrowding).
Except for the adverse reactions mentioned above and which occasionally occur, erythromycin is considered a drug with low toxicity. It can be used during lactation, gestation and the laying period. Erythromycin is antagonistic to lincomycin, clindamycin, chloramphenicol, methylprednisolone.
