What is Codamin P and what is it used for
Codamin P is an oral painkiller, available without a prescription, which is a combination of three active substances: codeine (in the form of codeine phosphate hemihydrate) – has a moderate painkilling effect through central action, paracetamol – has a pain and fever-fighting effect and caffeine – has a mild psychomotor stimulating effect through a central mechanism and antimigraine properties.
This medicine contains codeine. Codeine belongs to a class of medicines called opioid analgesics, which relieve pain through their action. It can be used alone or in combination with other analgesics, such as paracetamol. Codeine can be used for a short period of time in adolescents over 12 years of age, to relieve moderate pain, which is not relieved by other analgesics, such as paracetamol or ibuprofen taken alone.
Codamin P is indicated for the treatment of mild to moderate pain, including various types of headaches such as migraine headaches, tension headaches, toothaches, sinus pain, earaches, neuralgia and dysmenorrhea. Codamin P is also indicated for the treatment of fever, sore throats and for the relief of symptoms of colds and flu.
If you do not feel better after 3 days or if you feel worse, you should consult a doctor.

Possible side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
At recommended doses, side effects caused by paracetamol are rare and moderate, occurring mainly when high doses of the medicine are used.
However, haematological (blood) reactions have been reported, including leucopenia (decrease in the number of white blood cells), neutropenia (decrease in the number of certain white blood cells), pancytopenia (decrease in the number of all blood cells) and agranulocytosis.
Occasionally, nausea, vomiting, sweating, sudden facial flushing, headache, vertigo, dry mouth, visual disturbances or double vision, dizziness, rapid heartbeat, palpitations, low blood pressure when standing up, allergic reactions (rash, itching, facial swelling) and difficulty urinating (burning when urinating, frequent urination), spasm of the urinary or biliary tract may occur.
Hallucinations, agitation and mood swings, decreased libido or sexual function, stomach cramps have been reported rarely.
Very rare cases of serious skin reactions have been reported.
The use of codeine in high doses, especially in children, can cause psychomotor excitement and convulsions. Prolonged treatment with high doses of codeine increases the risk of addiction and withdrawal syndrome when the medication is suddenly stopped.
Caffeine in large doses can cause agitation, insomnia, palpitations, tremors, nervousness and irritability.
