Protecardin is an OTC drug intended for adults, which has acetylsalicylic acid as its active substance. Protecardin works by preventing blood cells called platelets (or platelets) from aggregating (“sticking”) and thus preventing blood clots (thrombi) from forming.
Because of this effect, Protecardin is used for:
– Prevention of recurrence of myocardial infarction and stroke (transient ischemic and cerebral infarction).
– Reducing the risk of myocardial infarction in patients with angina pectoris (known as painful chronic ischemic heart disease), or with multiple risk factors, such as: high blood pressure, increased blood lipid levels (hypercholesterolemia), smoking, diabetes and family history.
– Maintaining blood circulation in the blood vessels of the heart after certain surgeries (vascular surgery, percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty, coronary artery bypass).
Composition: Acetylsalicylic acid (75mg), microcrystalline cellulose, colloidal silicon dioxide, sodium lauryl sulfate, croscarmellose sodium, stearic acid, coating film: hypromellose 15cP (E 464), lactose monohydrate, titanium dioxide (E 171), macrogol 4000, citric acid monohydrate (E 330), copolymer C of methacrylic acid, talc, titanium dioxide (E 171), triethylcitrate (E 1505), colloidal anhydrous silicon dioxide, sodium hydrogen carbonate (E 500), sodium lauryl sulfate.
Method of administration:
– Always use Protecardin exactly as your doctor has told you. You should talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure.
– Adults: For long-term treatment, the usual dose is 1–2 Protecardin gastro-resistant tablets (75mg) once a day.
– In short-term treatment, on the recommendation of the treating physician, in acute coronary syndrome or ischemic stroke, it may be appropriate to administer higher doses, up to 300 (mg) acetylsalicylic acid. Subsequently, the treatment will continue with the recommended dose for long–term treatment.
– Gastro–resistant tablets should be swallowed whole, with enough liquid, preferably after a meal. They should not be divided, crushed or chewed.
– The drug is intended for long–term treatment, with the minimum effective dose.
Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to acetylsalicylic acid, other non–steroidal anti–inflammatory drugs, other salicylates or any of the excipients. Active gastric or duodenal ulcer, hemorrhagic diathesis, thrombocytopenia, hemophilia. History of asthma induced by the administration of salicylates or substances with similar action, especially non–steroidal anti–inflammatory drugs, phenylketonuria, concomitant administration with methotrexate in doses greater than 15mg/week, if you are pregnant.
Warnings:
– Protecardin should not be administered to children and adolescents, due to the risk of developing Reye‘s syndrome (manifested by: persistent vomiting, dehydration, impaired consciousness and seizures, requiring intensive care).
– Concomitant use of Protecardin with ethyl alcohol may increase the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding.
– Pregnancy and breast–feeding: Do not use Protecardin if you are pregnant in the last trimester of pregnancy. In the first two trimesters of pregnancy, take Protecardin only if your doctor recommends it. During breastfeeding, take Protecardin only if your doctor recommends it.
– Driving and using machines: Protecardin does not affect your ability to drive and use machines.
– The drug contains lactose monohydrate. If your doctor has warned you that you have an intolerance to some categories of carbohydrates, please ask him or her before taking this medication.
