Indications:
Before prescribing piroxicam, your doctor will assess the benefit you may get from using this medicine compared to the risk of side effects. Since you are taking piroxicam, your doctor may need to check you regularly and will tell you how often this is necessary.
Flamexin is used to relieve some symptoms caused by osteoarthritis (which can occur in arthrosis, a degenerative joint disease), rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis (rheumatism of the spine), such as inflammation, joint stiffness and joint pain.
This medicine does not cure arthritis and will only help you while you are taking it.
Your doctor will only prescribe piroxicam if the relief of symptoms with other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) has been unsatisfactory.
Contraindications:
Do not use Flamexin:
– if you have had an ulcer, bleeding or perforation in the stomach or intestine;
– if you have an ulcer, bleeding or perforation in your stomach or intestine;
– if you have had gastrointestinal disorders (inflammation of the stomach or intestine) that predispose
– to bleeding disorders, such as ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, gastrointestinal cancer or diverticulitis (inflamed or infected pouches in the colon);
– if you are taking other NSAIDs, including COX-2 selective NSAIDs and acetylsalicylic acid, a substance found in many medicines used to relieve pain and fever;
– if you are taking anticoagulant medicines, such as warfarin, to prevent blood clotting;
– if you have had a previous allergic reaction to piroxicam, other NSAIDs or other medicines or to any of the other ingredients of the medicine, especially serious skin reactions (regardless of severity), such as exfoliative dermatitis (intense reddening of the skin, with peeling in patches or layers), bullous reactions (Stevens-Johnson syndrome, a condition characterised by crusting of the skin or bleeding, erosions and blisters of the skin) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (a disease with blisters and peeling of the outer layer of the skin);
– if you have had bronchial asthma, rhinitis (inflammation of the nasal mucosa), angioneurotic oedema (swelling of the face, lips, throat) or urticaria, caused by acetylsalicylic acid or another non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug;
– if you have severe liver or kidney failure;
– if you have severe heart failure (a serious heart disease);
– if you are pregnant in the last trimester of pregnancy (from the 6th month);
– if you are breastfeeding.
Not for use in children and adolescents.
Precautions:
Before using Flamexin, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
Pregnancy, breastfeeding and fertility:
Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking any medicine.
The use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs during the last trimester of pregnancy may cause toxic effects on the heart, lungs and kidneys of the fetus (increased pulmonary arterial pressure, premature closure of the ductus arteriosus, renal failure). Use at the end of pregnancy may prolong bleeding time in the mother and fetus.
If absolutely necessary, piroxicam should only be used in the first 5 months of pregnancy, with caution and only on medical advice.
Piroxicam is excreted in small quantities in breast milk. Do not use piroxicam while breastfeeding.
Driving and using machines:
The medicine may alter the cortical alertness to the point of compromising the ability to drive or perform activities that require quick reflexes.
Method of administration:
Always use piroxicam exactly as your doctor has told you. You should talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
Your doctor will examine you regularly to make sure that you are taking the optimal dose of piroxicam. Your doctor will adjust your treatment to take the lowest dose that best controls your symptoms.
Under no circumstances should you change the dose without talking to your doctor.
Adults and elderly:
The maximum daily dose is 20 mg piroxicam taken as a single daily dose.
If you are over 70 years of age, your doctor may prescribe a lower dose and reduce the duration of your treatment.
